GRAY: Sanford Virgil Ethridge, Sr, one of the last members of the "greatest generation," passed on Monday, March 01, 2010. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 02, 5:00 - 7:00pm at the Ethridge residence at 157 Stewart Avenue in Gray. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, March 03, at 11:00am, at Elam Memorial Gardens at 203 Elam Church Road in Jones County, with Reverend Gary Thomas officiating.
Mr. Ethridge, the son of the late Gordon Davis Ethridge, Sr. and Ethel Moore Ethridge, was born March 10, 1922, and was ten days short of his 88th birthday. He was a native of James and lived all of his life in Jones County. Mr. Ethridge was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps and a B-24 co-pilot during World War II. He was co-owner of Ethridge Brothers Construction Company with his brother Charles Ethridge. Mr. Ethridge was a member of Elam Baptist Church in Jones County. He was preceded in death by his brothers: Gordon Davis Ethridge, Jr., and Cecil Ethridge, Sr.; and by his sister: Elizabeth E. Sloan.
He lived a long, happy and eventful life as every day with Sanford was an adventure. To Sanford, life was to be lived to the fullest as he loved people and every day was an opportunity for a party. His friends will attest that the mold was broken, and that he was a unique character.
A special thank you goes to the devoted helpers who cared for him so lovingly for the last years of his life, and to Hospice of Central Georgia for their kind assistance during the last month of his life.
Mr. Ethridge is survived by his faithful wife of sixty-five years: Nellene Davis Ethridge; his brother and sister-in-law: Charles and Carolyn Ethridge; his loving children and their spouses: Sandy and Vickie Ethridge, Marianne E. and Phil Bivins and Margaret E. Allman. He leaves his six precious grandchildren and their spouses, his greatest treasures: Deanne Bivins, Philip and Tarin Bivins, Alan and Meredith Ethridge, David Ethridge, Kate Allman and Davis Allman. Mr. Ethridge also leaves a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins.
