Thomas Daley lived near Watt Park [now the Nevada County Fairgrounds] & was a member of the Order of Owls, and the Grass Valley aerie of Eagles.
He drowned in Rex Reservoir on Grub Creek after enjoying a hunt and picnic stew with Will, Walter & Charles Jones Jr; Al & Dennis Bonivert; Elwood Moore and Ole Olsen.
Following their meal, the group built a raft and launched it in the reservoir, the raft tipped and the men were cast into the water. Thomas Daley, who was stated to have been a good swimmer, and Charles Jones Jr., who could not swim, failed to make the return trip to the safety of the shore.
The newspaper account stated he was to be buried in the family plot in the old Catholic Cemetery on Church Street.
