Leroy Barnes, 73, husband of Jearl "Jewel" Cuzick Barnes for 55 years, died Sunday Jan. 23, of a heart attack at his home.

He was born May 5, 1931, the son of the late Lettie Laffon Barnes and James W. "Jim" Barnes.

He is survived by two sons, Donald R. Barnes of Nicholasville and Danny L. Barnes of Carlisle; a daughter, Nancy J. Bowman of Nicholasville; four grandchildren and their spouses, Danny R. and Christine Barnes of Mount Vernon, Katherine B. and Junior Barnett of Wilmore, William D. and Doris Barnes of Nicholasville, and Elijah J. Barnes of Flemingsburg; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, James W. Barnes of Garrard County; five sisters, Genevive Goodwin of Lexington, Edna Shanks of Lexington, Lyda Reynolds of Nicholasville, Frances "Lu" Taft of Nicholasville and Sallie Johnson of Lexington; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter C. Barnes and Homer Barnes; a sister, Margaret A. Cuzick; and a grandson, Billy R. Barnes.

Services were held Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. at Betts & West Funeral Home. Burial took place at Keene Cemetery.

Bearers were Terry Cuzick, Nathan Barnes, Jeff Barnes, Junior Barnett, Jamie Barnes and Jose Yepez.

Honorary bearers were Dave Cuzick, Joe Wagoner, Willy Barnes, Rusty Wagoner, Rob Gibson, Luke Brown, Travis Cuzick and Robert Gibson.
