Obituary - The Mountain Democrat (Placerville, California) - September 7, 1895
Mr. Walter D. Carpenter who resided at the old Hufft ranch about one mile west of town, died on Saturday afternoon of last week, after a lingering illness. Mr. Carpenter was a bright, honest and upright young man, of good steady habits and without a single enemy, and his untimely death, just in the prime of manhood, is a severe blow to his sadly bereaved family, and the community at large. By his death, the family are deprived of a loving husband, a kind father, and a faithful brother and friend, while our county loses one of its most intelligent citizens. His funeral took place on Monday afternoon at the family residence, under the auspices of I.O.O.F., of which he was an honered member, and was largely attended, by sorrowing friends, who came from long distances to pay the last sad tribute of respect to a departed school mate and friend. A quartette of voices consisting of Misses Lena Waddell and Mollie Carpenter, and Messrs. Bland and Rowlands of Placerville, rendered choice selections at the house and grave. His remains were laid to rest in the lot adjoining the City Cemetery, where both Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter are buried. The pall-bearers were Charles Lyons, Eli Clark, W. O. Skinner, Wm. Clemence, W. D. Cotten and J. K. Hogan.
