Born to William and Lillian Birnbaum, Larry entered New York City's ladies garment trade after graduating high school at age fifteen. During WW2 he rose to Master Sergeant in the Signal Corps.
Upon his U.S. Army discharge he returned to Fresno re-entering retail as a Bruckner's assistant manager. In 1946
Larry met fellow New Yorker, Nathalie M. Wolfe, MD, pediatrician, whom he married in 1947. He opened Larre's Women's Apparel in 1950, eventually with three stores.
In 1963-1966 Larry served as President of Temple Beth Israel. Until cancer cut Nathalie's life short in 1975, they shared many business, professional and family interests. Also predeceased by sister Theda.
Larry is survived by his wife Susan; and his three children, daughter Dana of Montana; sons Alan and his wife Kathleen of Fresno and William and his wife Evelyn Christoph of New Hampshire. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Nathan, Carly and Lauren of California; Laurence Aimée, Christoph and Daniel of New Hampshire.
A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, February 15, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at Beth Israel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations to Temple Beth Israel are suggested.
