Mr. Robert Lemond Abernathy Sr., 74, of Lenoir, NC 28645 died Friday, June 6, 2008, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc.
He was born May 22, 1934, in Caldwell County to the late Lonnie Abernathy and Mable Foster Abernathy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kelly Jeanette Abernathy; four brothers, Edward, Alfred, Harold and Charles Abernathy; two sisters, Mary Ann Abernathy and Margaruite Henry; and one granddaughter, Tiffany Abernathy.
Mr. Abernathy was retired from Consolidated Edison Electric Co. in Energy Production Control and was in the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. He was a member of Smith Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was a former superintendent of Sunday school, member of the men's choir and mass choir, trustee, lay leader, Stephen's Minister, adult Sunday school teacher, and president and member of United Methodist Men. Mr. Abernathy delivered meals on wheels, was on the board of Caldwell County Adult Care, a Master Mason Lodge #731, a member of Harper-Witherspoon American Legion #231 and served as chaplain.
Mr. Abernathy is survived by his wife of 52 years, Juristine M. Lipford Abernathy of the home; two sons, Robert L. Abernathy Jr. of Columbus, Ga., and Curtis D. Abernathy of the home; a daughter, Melissa A. Taylor of the home; three sisters-in-law, the Rev. Dr. Luna B. Abernathy of Raleigh, N.C., Jerlene L. Michaux of Lenoir, N.C., and Jeanette L. Suitt (Charles) of Cary, N.C.; two brothers-in-law, Durant Lipford (Maryetta) and Edward L. Lipford, both of Lenoir, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildre;n and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.
