Dick was one of nine children born to Thomas P. V. Axtell and his wife, Mary M. Mooney. He married Frances P. "Pearl" Cross; a daughter of George W. Cross and his wife, Arabella Chapman. Dick and Pearl crlrbrated their nuptials on September 12, 1896 in Woodland (Iroquois County), Illinois. They had four children; three sons and one daughter. Pearl and their youngest son, Dickie died in 1906. Richard remarried to a young woman named Emeline "Emma" J. Koenig in late 1906. By 1920, Dick moved with his new family to VanBuren County, Arkansas. They had eight known children; three sons and five daughters. Dick and Emma were residing in Madison County, Arkansas when he passed away. Dick was a farmer.
