Vance Junior Ahlf, 87, of Champaign, died at 12:08 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2008, at the Illini Heritage Health Care Center in Champaign.

Mr. Ahlf was born December 9, 1920, Boulder, Illinois, the son of Otto and Mildred Jennings Ahlf. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Foster in Champaign on Dec. 6, 1945. She preceded him in death on September 16, 1993.

Mr. Ahlf is survived by three daughters, Ann Blanchfield (Daniel), Linda Sepahirodand Nancy Collins, three grandchildren, Suzi Ahlf, Michael Ahlf (Sybil) and Jennifer Collins,three great-grandchildren, two sisters, Verta Pepple (Robert)and Betty Jett (Joseph), sister-in-law, Florence Stoerger, brother-in-law, Donald Stewart, daughter-in-law, Pamela Ahlf and former son-in-law, Grant Collins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his sister, Jean Stewart and his son, Vance Foster Ahlf.

Mr. Ahlf received his undergraduate degree in agriculture from the University of Illinois, class of 1942, and a master's degree in education in 1959. He taught general science/biology and agriculture in Humboldt High, Effingham, Sandoval, Ridge Farm, Armstrong and Blue Island, where he was science coordinator and chairman of adult education. He concluded his teaching career at Greencastle, Ind. Mr. Ahlf's 38 years of teaching included 24 years in vocational agriculture and 14 years in science/biology. His students won many awards, and he also shared in those awards by being named Honorary Illinois State Farmer.

Mr. Ahlf was a veteran of World War II where he was a second lieutenant in the Army Air Force, acting as a navigator. He was a member of the University Place Christian Church where he had served as a deacon.
