Essie Ray Hughes, or Ray as she was called, was born on January 24, 1899, in Wimberley, Hays County, Texas. Her parents were Nathan Emery Hughes and Eliza "Lidie" Mary Wimberley Hughes. Her grandparents on her father's side were Thomas Jefferson Hughes and Mary Ann Meeks Hughes. Her maternal grandparents were Pleasant Wimberley and Amanda Jackson Wimberley.
Ray grew up surrounded by family. She was the sixth child to be born to Nathan and Lidie and had three older brothers and two older sisters. Ray was the third generation of her family to live in Wimberley, on the banks of the Blanco River and Cypress Creek.
When Ray was 23, on June 10, 1922, Ray married 28-year-old Albert Edward Kern who was born in New Jersey. Ray may have had a prior marriage since on the 1930 Census she indicated that she had first married at age 20. Some time between 1922 and 1930, Albert and Ray moved to California. The 1930 Census indicated that Albert was an employee in a "picture studio" at that time. Ray and Albert's marriage because unhappy, and at some time between 1930 and 1950, the two divorced.
Ray married again when she ws 53 on October 23, 1951, in California. She married Attilo Bardellini who had been born in Italy and came to California as a 10-year-old boy. Attilio worked as a cook in various bakeries and restaurants. The two had a very happy marriage that lasted unil Attilio's death at the age of 77 on October 1, 1976, in Los Angeles County, California. Knowing that she wanted to return to Texas where she had been born and still had family, Ray had Attilio buried in Wimberley Cemetery, Wimberley, Texas.
Ray lived another 17 years after Attilio's death. She died on January 3, 1994, three weeks shy of her 95th birthday, in Austin, Travis County, Texas. She was buried in Wimberley Cemetery next to Attilio.
