Celestia S. Hayden was born in Ohio. Her father was Christopher Hayden and her mother, Anna McCollum. The 1860 census shows Celestia and her husband, Legrand Swift, living on a farm by her parents in Michigan.
She married Legrand E. Swift in Van Buren County, Michigan, on February 6, 1859. They had one child, Ada Leora Swift, born 12 November 1859.
Legrand enlisted in the Union Army on August 12, 1861 and died at General Hospital No. 2 at Nashville, Tennessee, January 9, 1863. He was buried at the Nashville Cemetery, grave no. 2456. Their child, Ada, died March 1862.
Celestia married again on October 25, 1868 in Van Buren County, Michigan, to a widower, Dewitt C. Chapman. They farmed between Lawrence and Paw Paw, Michigan. Four children were born to Dewitt and Celestia: Arlo, Minnie, Freedus and Lilly. Dewitt died on December 26, 1887 in Michigan.
Celestia lived with her son, Freedus, and his family, moving to Ida County, Iowa and later to Cottonwood County, Minnesota, where she died on January 30, 1906.
