Captain Kjell Anker, of West Dover, Vermont, formerly of Panama City, died on October 27, 2014, at age 81, of a hemorrhagic stroke at Grace Cottage Hospital Hospice, Townshend, Vermont.

Born in Nesna, Norway, he graduated from Styrmannseksamen, Norway's Navigational College in Oslo. He received a license in radar and gyro from Kristiansand Institute, Norway; a Diving and Diving Theory degree from Oslo University, and an Administrative Business degree from the University of Southampton, England. At the age of twenty-six Kjell received his license "to perform the duties of master/captain on all motor or steam vessels of any gross tonnage in international service on any bodies of water on Earth."

He began his maritime career at fifteen years of age on Norway's three-masted training ship, "Sorlandet," and honed his seamanship skills with Nils Ebbsen Shipping Co., Oslo, Norway; National Bulk Carriers, N.Y., New York; La Dano Linjen A/S, Norway; and Thoresen Car Ferries, LTD, South Hampton, England. During his merchant ship career, Kjell was most proud of his service on the "TS/S Belocean" stationed near Korea. He was nineteen years old and felt honored to be assigned to a vessel bringing supplies to United States soldiers fighting in the Korean War.

As the Port of Miami, Florida, was positioning itself to become the leader in the U.S. passenger cruise ship industry, Kjell was recruited by Norwegian Caribbean Lines to become Captain of the "M/S Sunward" and later the "M/S Starward."

After twenty-five years and ten months of actual sea time, he traded life at sea for maritime industry management, becoming Port Captain for Hess Oil Virgin Island Corporation in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. While there he was appointed Royal Norwegian Consul to St. Croix by King Olav VI of Norway. He was next asked by Cruise East/The Thoresen Group in the Republic of Singapore to accept the position of Maritime Superintendent. Kjell ended his career in the shipping industry as Vice President and Fleet A Manager, with Stolt-Nielsen, Inc., U.S.A., retiring in 1995 to Vermont, where in 1997 he became a United States citizen.
He died as he lived, with great dignity, stoicism, courage, impeccable integrity, and genuine concern for others. Modesty was one of his strongest virtues, thus he would be mortified at this public exposé of his accomplishments. There will be no public memorial service.

Kjell is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Andrea (Hobbs) Anker; his son, BjØrn Kristian Anker and wife, Cathrine; grandchildren, Caroline and Kristian Frederik; sisters, Kirsten Pedersen and Unn Anker; and brother Torgeir Anker; along with nieces and nephews; and Sasha, his beloved Chow Chow.

Kjell's ashes will be divided and dispersed to the Norwegian Sea and a mountain peak in Norway, the Gulf of Mexico off the U.S. coast and a mountain peak in Vermont, as well as, West Dover Cemetery.
