Joyce Briffett, 82, Lake Benton, died Monday, June 21, 2010 at Pipestone County Medical Center, Pipestone.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 24 at the Lake Benton United Methodist Church, Lake Benton.
Interment was in Memorial Hill Cemetery, Lake Benton.
Joyce Yvonne Briffett was born Oct. 3, 1927 to George and Veronica (Wagner) Smith in Lake Benton, where she was raised and attended Lake Benton Public School. She was baptized at the Presbyterian Church in Tracy and was confirmed in the Methodist Church in Lake Benton. She worked in her parents' café until she graduated from high school. She then went to work at Nieforth's Clothing Store.
She married LeRoy L. Briffett on Aug. 27, 1949 at the Methodist Church in St. James. She worked side by side with her husband in Briffett Hardware in Lake Benton.
After her husband died in 1982, Joyce worked at Draper's Carpet and Wallpaper Store. She then worked at Lake Benton Public School, where she was head cook for 15 years.
She was a member of Lake Benton United Methodist church and of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Randy Schmidt, Canby; two grandsons; three step-grandsons; two sisters, Nadine Borresen, Mankato and Beverly (Bob) Neale, Sauk Rapids; two brothers, Kenneth Smith, St. Cloud and Larry Wagner, Sacramento, Calif.; sister-in-law Phyllis Smith, Jasper and her very special friend and companion of 20 years, James K. Sorensen.
She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy; five sisters, Vivian Busselman, Valda Naeve, Audrey Schnell, Georgia Smith and Hazel Jordt and one brother, George Smith.
