"Francis Becker Dies"
"The entire community was shocked and deeply grieved to learn of the death of Francis Becker, 17 year-old son of Mr. And Mrs. Will H. Becker. Francis died early Wednesday morning at the Touro Infirmary in New Orleans following an operation for appendicitis, which was followed by peritonitis. The operation was performed on Tuesday of last week and when his condition became serious his mother, who was coming south in a car after attending the graduation from the University of Missouri and the subsequent marriage of another son, William Henry, was reached by a telegraphic message. Mrs. Becker caught the train in Memphis arriving in New Orleans Saturday.
Funeral services were held at six o'clock this evening from the Ferd V. Becker residence, with Rev. M. A. MacHale, pastor of the Catholic church, officiating. A host of grief stricken relatives and friends were present as the spirit of the departed was confided to the care of the Almighty Father, and at the Catholic cemetery as the body was tenderly laid away amid a profusion of exquisite floral offerings, eloquent in their tribute of love for the youth who had passed away in the flower of young manhood.
Francis, who had been one of the outstanding cadets at Riverside Military Academy of Gainesville, Ga., and Hollywood-by-the-Sea, Fla., attended school in Brookhaven before his family moved to Kentwood. Always willing to do his bit, and with a ready smile, he was loved and admired by friends both young and old. His handsome, intelligent young face was a true reflector of the lovable character within.
Three other sons, William Henry Becker of Columbia, Mo., Albert Lilly Becker, a midshipman at Annapolis, Tommy, age 15, and a little daughter Lucy, survive to comfort the hearts of the bereaved parents. Albert Lilly and William Henry arrived on No. 3 this afternoon."

Family note: Francis was a talented musician and a gifted scholar. He attended Riverside Academy hoping to be accepted at Massachusetts Institue of Technology (MIT) upon graduation from Riverside where he won the Scholoarship Medal, as reflected in his academic transcript.
