Katie was the fourth child of Friedrich Wilhelm Bald (b. 1815, Prussia) and Elisabeth Schneider (b. 1813, Prussia), who arrived in Baltimore, Md., on September 9, 1844 aboard the ship "Virginia." Through further research since her gravestone was placed by my husband and me, I have concluded that her birth was more likely June 7, 1945, because she was born in Maryland, and her family did not arrive there until September 1844. Her birth year on original records varies from 1844 to 1846.

The family tale is that, about 1866, Katie eloped ("ran away with," as their story goes) with Frederick Frank Kammersell, soon after his arrival from Germany. Katie and Fred moved from Baltimore to Pittsburgh; and thereafter, contact with the Bald family was lost. Fred was born in Saxony in 1827, making him about 18 years Katie's senior; and at the time of the 1870 and 1880 Censuses, they were living in Allegheny City, Allegheny Co., Pa., where Fred was a cooper and a laborer. According the 1900 and 1910 Censuses, Katie was the mother of seven children, four of whom have been identified as Anna Catharine (1869-1892), (Mary) Emma (1874-1963), Frederick Frank, Jr. (1877-1939) and Max (b. 1879).

No record of Fred's death or burial has been found, but the license for Katharine Kammersell's marriage to Thomas Adley on April 25, 1898 states that she and Thomas were both widowed. Thomas was born in December 1835 in Ireland, and he was a laborer. He had been married to Sarah O'Donell, with whom he had about eight children. In 1900, Katie and Thomas were living in Allegheny City, which became part of Pittsburgh Ward 23 in 1907, where they are shown in the 1910 and 1920 Censuses. Thomas died before 1930, when Katie, a widow, was living at the home of her daughter, Emma Hoffman, on Evergreen Avenue in Millvale, Pa., where she died.

[A number of years ago, I (great granddaughter Joan Riddle Giles) was able to locate and communicate with several of the Bald descendants, now deceased, who were still living in Baltimore, and they were thrilled to hear from a descendant of their aunt/great aunt. They knew only that she and a man moved to Pittsburgh, and they were happy to learn the rest of the story.]
