Alvin Hanes Alcorn was born April 30, 1918, in Geary, Oklahoma, to Susan Dora and Alvin Byron Alcorn. He died Wednesday November 14, 2007 He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Ralph; and his beloved wife of 66 years, Naomi. Alvin graduated from Geary Public Schools. He and Naomi married August 11, 1940, at her home in Geary. He earned a BS in Education at the Western Institute of Technology (SWOSU) in 1942. Alvin and Naomi moved to Calumet where he was hired as principal, teacher, and athletic coach. He was subsequently hired by Greenfield Public Schools to fill the superintendent's position. He taught briefly at Consolidated 8 School near Hobart prior to WWII. During WWII, Alvin served aboard the USS Quincy in the Pacific Theater for two years. He was awarded two stars, the Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, and was a member of the Order of Victors, Tokyo Bay. He witnessed the signing of the Peace Accord ending WWII and knew firsthand the price of freedom. Following WWII, he completed his Master's in School Administration at Oklahoma A&M (OSU). He then accepted employment in Buffalo as a teacher, principal, and athletic coach. His career then took him to the Oklahoma State Board of Education, Finance Division, where he remained for 12 years. In 1960, he accepted a new position at Central State College as Business Manager and Comptroller. He was named Vice-President for Administration and retired from UCO after more than 23 years of service. Civic involvement was of great importance to Alvin; he worked fervently to attract new businesses to Edmond. He served on the Board of Directors for the Edmond Chamber of Commerce for 15 years and was both Treasurer and President. He served as Chairman of the Industrial Trust and was a charter member of the YMCA. He joined Gov. Henry Bellmon in working on the Deep Fork Project and the Lake Arcadia Steering Committee. Alvin was named Edmond Citizen of the Year in 1976 and was inducted into the Edmond Hall of Fame in 1983. The Edmond Chamber of Commerce dedicated the Conference Room in his honor in 1999. Alvin has long been the voice for the role of higher education in improving the quality of life for all Oklahomans. He was appointed to the Rose State College Board of Regents by Governors Bellmon and Walters. During his two terms, he served as Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer; he also served on the Regents' Legislative Committee. The Grand Foyer of the Communications Building at Rose State was named in his honor in 2001. In 2007, he was inducted into the Higher Education Hall of Fame. He was a trustee on the UCO Foundation Board. Alvin attended the First Christian Church of Edmond. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Oklahoma Retired Educators Association, the Masons, TIP Club, and the American Legion. He leaves behind two daughters, Jane Calvert and Alice Bones and her husband, Jim. Grandchildren include Katherine and William Bones and Rachel and Chase Calyert. A memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church in Edmond at 2 p.m. Mon., Nov. 19, 2007.
