James F. Alling

James F. Alling, a long-time resident of the Grand Coulee Dam area, passed away on Friday, April 10, 2009, at Coulee Community Hospital following a long illness.
Jim began ranching on the family homestead when he was 17. He raised horses and cattle. In 1959 he brought irrigated water up to the bluffs of Rufus Woods Lake out of the Columbia River. Jim retired early at age 45 in 1971 and moved to Coulee Dam.
Jim was born on the family homestead on May 28, 1924. He was the son of Benjamin and Edna Alling. He was one of nine children. He is survived by two sisters, June Weber and Edna Pfeifer.
Jim married Barbara J. Bise (deceased) in 1947. They enjoyed ranching until he retired then they spent the next 20 or more years traveling to Quartzsite, Ariz. They took up arts and crafts and making jewelry which they sold at fairs and flea markets until their health deteriorated. They were married 54 years.
Jim and Barbara had three children: Sue Alling and her children, Ben Alling his wife Evelyn and their children, Jack Alling and his wife Judy and their children. They have 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He is survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; (deceased) were Harry, Jim and Jerry. Survived by Carol Haskins, Mary Miller, Rod Bise, Earl Bise, Ed Bise and Bob Bise who spent many good years at the ranch.
Jim married Ida Mae Goldman on March 26, 2004, in Coulee Dam. She resides at the family residence. Ida has four children: Bonnie Femling of Coulee Dam, Bud Femling of Plentywood, Mont., Gary Femling of North Bend, Ore., Joanne Pettit of Liberty Lake; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Jim's life will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2009, at the Grand Coulee Dam Senior Center at 2 p.m. Desserts and refreshments will be served.
Memorials may be sent to the Coulee Dam Firemen's Association.
