BYRON -- A memorial service for Dale L. Brooks will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Byron, with the Rev. Sharon Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Byron Cemetery, with the Byron American Legion providing military honors.
Mr. Brooks, 71, of Byron, died Friday (March 7, 2008) at Fairview Nursing Home in Dodge Center, of complications from Parkinson's disease and a recent fall.
Born March 9, 1936, in Byron, he grew up there and graduated from Byron High School. He attended the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture for a year and then served in the Army from 1956 to 1958. On Sept. 7, 1956, he married Janice M. Larsen in Byron. The couple owned and operated a dairy farm in rural Byron; Mr. Brooks also drove a school bus. He was a member of the Olmsted County ASCS Committee, the Kalmar Township Board, and the Zumbro Valley Grange. He enjoyed traveling, hunting in Canada, spending time at his cabin in Hayward, Wis., watching his grandchildren's sporting events, bowling and the card club.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Joni Brooks (Ken Hames) of Pine Island and Barbara (Richard) Brooks-Holtegaard of Rochester; two sons, Michael and Tom (Catherine), both of Byron; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a brother, Larry (Sandra) of Byron. He was preceded in death by a grandchild, two brothers and a sister.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Byron United Methodist Church, and an hour before the service Tuesday at the church.
