Estelle or Stella as she was called was a very beautiful and vivacious woman. Twice married and estranged from her second husband, she was the mother of two children (11 & 4). Stella frequently enjoyed the company of men...many of whom were married. In the fall of 1936 Stella ended an affair with one married man and had quickly picked up with another. Her previous lover, a man much older than herself, named Anthony (Tony) Gomez was furious with Stella and decided he must punish her. On the evening of September 26, 1936 Tony Gomez forced his way into a room of 240 East Intendencia Street in Pensacola, Florida... the rooming house where Stella lived with her two children and viciously cut her throat. Several other people attempted to stop the crazed man and received cuts themselves. As Stella began to bleed to death Gomez attacked again and cut her throat a second time so deeply that he nearly severed her head. This brutal murder occurred in front of Stella's 4 year old son who saw his mother being killed. Even though there were several witnesses, Gomez was not convicted of the murder. He died two years later (on December 19, 1938) in bed of a heart attack. Tony Gomez was a married man with 7 children as well as being a semi prominent local official. It would seem that the murder of the unfortunate Stella Bedgood was largely "swept under the carpet". Stella was portrayed as being a bad mother and a wanton woman who essentially "got what she deserved" for having carried on an affair with a respectable married man.
