He was born Feb. 24, 1931, in Alton to John Wesley and Lela (Thole) Allen.
He graduated from East Alton-Wood River High School in 1948. He worked at Hartford Tannery and Standard Oil, and was assistant postmaster at the Wood River Post Office for 30 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Wood River Rotary, coached Khoury Little League baseball, was a Boy Scout leader and enjoyed bowling.
Survivors include two sons, David Allen and wife, Lisa, of Olathe, Kan., and Barton Allen of Florissant; one sister, Janet McCart of Columbus, Ind.; and one brother, Eugene Allen and wife, Barbara, of Hartford.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at Marks Mortuary in Wood River.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at the funeral home, followed by 1:30 p.m. committal services at Green Pond Cemetery in Pearl. Coy Siddall will officiate.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
