Daniel E. Allen, 92, of Elizabeth Township, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006, at home. He was born June 12, 1914, in Sagamore, the son of the late William and Nettie Fike Allen, and was the husband of Helen (Wiegel) Allen for 65 years. He was a member, elder and former trustee of Bethesda United Presbyterian Church, Elizabeth Borough, served with the Army in the European Theater of War in World War II and was honorably discharged as a first sergeant of the 491st Military Police Escort Guard Company. Mr. Allen was a member of the Pennsylvania Motor Police from 1938 to 1941, serving in the Elizabeth, Imperial, Washington and Waynesburg areas. He worked at the National Works of the U.S. Steel Co., McKeesport, in the personnel and safety departments, retired in 1975 after 34 1/2 years of service and was a life member of the National Works Supervisors Club. He was a member and past commander of Alonzo Wiegel American Legion Post 553, Elizabeth Borough, and a member of the Elizabeth Lions Club for more than 57 years, serving the club as president. Dan also was a member and past president of Clairton Hill Chapter 2862 of the American Association of Retired Persons. Dan always was interested in sports, having played varsity basketball in high school and independent ball until 1938, playing his last game of basketball on an Army team in Paris, France, while in the service. He managed a Little League team for several years and continued his interest in sports throughout his life. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed receiving his "Hole in One" award at Butler's Golf Course. He was a member of the Oldtimers Golf League of Elizabeth Township. Dan also was predeceased by his brother, George, and a sister, Audrey Reid. In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Robert D. (Lisa) Allen, of Elizabeth Borough, and James W. (Cindy) Allen of Chicora; sister Velma Vadasy, of Syracuse, N.Y.; granddaughters Tara Allen, of Elizabeth Borough, and Amber Allen, of Chicora; grandson Matt Allen, of Chicora; great-granddaughter Katie Allen, of Chicora, and nieces and nephews. Viewing will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the PAUL E. BEKAVAC FUNERAL HOME, 221 Second St., Elizabeth Borough, where services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel with the Rev. August Thalman officiating. Burial in Round Hill Cemetery.
