AHERN - Early Sunday morning, November 2, 2008, the feast of All Souls day, the Ithaca community lost one of its most gentle and compassionate former members with the death of Gerri (Geraldine Anne Hankiewicz) Ahern. Gerri's fervent Catholic faith and willingness to accept the cross of cancer that she was asked to bear inspired all those who walked with Gerri in her journey. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 11, 1947 Gerri graduated from Grand Rapids West Catholic High School in 1965. On November 23, 1968 she married Jim Ahern, her husband of nearly 40 years. Together they raised three children: Mike, Kristyn, and Julie. Gerri was always seen at her husband's side or in the bleachers of every Ithaca varsity football game cheering her Yellowjackets on to a victory. She spent Saturdays and Sundays with Jim either attending football games or watching them on tv in the comfort of their home. When Gerri wasn't watching a football game she was spending time with another of her passions: her grandchildren, returning home to visit them five or six times a year from their new location in Florida. Active not only in church and choir activities at St. Paul the Apostle church in Ithaca, Gerri became an active rollerblader and kayak enthusiast. True to her compassionate nature, after relocating to the Ft. Myers, Florida area almost five years ago, Gerri spent her spare time teaching English to Spanish speaking people. Gerri is survived by her husband, Jim; son, Mike (Raquel) Ahern and their children, Zachary, Ryan and Luke of Rockford; daughter, Julie (Troy) Saunders and their son, Trevin of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; daughter, Pamela (Jason) Conn and their children, Lisset and Noble of Columbus, Ohio; sisters, Camille Crapsey of Grand Haven; Marcia (Steve) Storey of Hastings; Diane (Whitey) Piechocki of Grand Rapids; and brother, Mike (Starley) Hankiewicz of Garland, Texas. Gerri was preceded in death by her daughter, Kristyn; her parents, Andrew and Anne Hankiewicz; and brother-in-law, Richard Crapsey. Visitation hours at the Barden Funeral Home in Ithaca will be Tuesday from 2 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Ithaca, Michigan. Online condolences may be sent to bardenfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, the Ahern family asks you to consider a donation to the Kristyn Ahern Scholarship Fund at Ithaca High School. Contact the high school at (989) 875-3373.
