Nolan Troy Akins, 88, son of Guy Z. and Melva Akins, was born Feb. 26, 1913, at Elk Creek. He died Oct. 11, 2001, at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston following a lengthy illness.
The Akins family moved to Houston in 1919. Mr. Akins graduated from Houston High School in 1931 and attended Teachers College in Springfield (now Southwest Missouri State University) for three and a half years where he majored in music. He returned home to help his father and brothers establish Akins Motor Co. That business continued until May 1979.
He married Wave Campbell Oct. 1, 1936, at the home of Mills and Nora Campbell at Summersville. The Akins had three children and recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Akins was a member of the United Methodist Church in Houston for more than 60 years and sang in the choir until his health no longer permitted. His gift of music in both choir and violin have been a blessing to those who knew him.
He served on the Houston City Council and was a member of the Houston Lions Club, working for the betterment of the community. His hobbies included hunting and fishing in the county. He enjoyed making trips to Texas and Oregon visiting his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Leonard; his son, Nolan Don; and a daughter, Carolyn, who died at birth.
Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Colleen Tengler of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Duard and Guy Akins of Springfield; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services were Oct. 15 at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. L.J. Lowe and the Rev. Jim Norris officiating. Burial was in the Pine Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
