Mrs. Avis H. Benge
age 83, widow of James "Jim" Benge, of Brodhead passed away peacefully at her residence on Sunday, August 14, 2011 surrounded by her family.
She was born March 13, 1928 in Brodhead, Ky., daughter of the late Robert "Bob" and Maude Denny Hamm. She was a member of Ottawa Baptist Church and operated Benge Grocery for many years. The community of Brodhead enjoyed many meals prepared by Avis, as well as her endeavors for supporting Ottawa Cemetery. She will be lovingly remembered for her love of cooking, gardening, and crocheting. In 1951 she was united in holy matrimony to James "Jim" Benge and from that union came three sons, Larry, Bill and Dale.
Those left to mourn her passing include her sons: Larry (Ann) Benge of Eubank, Ky; and Bill (Sandy) of Stanford, Ky. Six grandchildren: Larry Douglas Benge, Bridgett Ann Benge, Jamie Dale Ross, Amie Denise Thompson, Eric Daniel Benge and Robert "Bobby" Benge. A brother Alonzo (Anna Mae) Hamm of Brodhead, Ky; Six great grandchildren: Ethan, Parker, Callie Rose, Autumn, Koty and Tommy Benge. As well as a host of nieces/nephews, friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James "Jim" Benge, parents Robert & Maude Hamm; a son Dale Benge; five brothers: Alvin, Devert "Jake", E.J., Dalmas "Hopper" and infant Bobby Hamm; a sister Eula Braun.
Visitation for Mrs. Avis Benge will be Tuesday, August 16, 2011 from 11AM-1PM at the Marvin E. Owens Home for Funerals.
Funeral services for Mrs. Avis Benge will be conducted Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at 1PM, with Bro. Luther Allen officiating. Burial will follow in the Ottawa Cemetery.
