TAYLORVILLE - Catherine Elizabeth Banning, 105, of Taylorville died 8:30 a.m. Tuesday (March 23, 2004) in Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Pana. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Patricks's Catholic Church, Pana, with Father Don Roberts officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in McClure Funeral Home, Taylorville. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Pana.
Mrs. Banning was born Oct. 8, 1898, in Owaneco. She was one of nine children and the last living offspring of John Franklin and Martha Jane Durbin. She enjoyed baking, crocheting and playing cards. Prior to living at Heritage Manor, Mrs. Banning resided the past 30 years of her life in Taylorville, moving back there from Pana and Tower Hill, where she raised her nine children. She was one of the first children to attend St. Mary's School in Taylorville and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Legion of Mary and a longtime member of Catholic Daughters of America in Taylorville and Pana. She married Benjamin A. Banning on Oct. 24, 1917, in Springfield. He preceded in death on Nov. 25, 1956.
Surviving are her son, Ben Banning and wife Florence of Pana; daughters, Geraldine Haines of Taylorville; Catherine Standley of North Ridge, Calif.; Rose Mary Clayton of Sullivan, Ind.; Teresa Purdeu of Chippewaw Falls, Wis.; Joan Murphy and husband Darrell of Beach Grove, Ind.; Marjorie Hines and husband James of Fairview Heights; Ruth Ann Kirkpatrick and husband Rollie of Pana; daughter-in-law, Melba Banning of Alabama; 42 grandchildren; 82 great-grandchildren; 28 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers; six sisters; son, John Earl Banning, two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild
