FAIRFIELD - Michael Anthony Abbey, 68, of Fairfield, passed away Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, after a two-year battle with cancer. Michael was born in Rochester, N.Y., on Feb. 23, 1942, the son of Francis and Marie (Kuhn) Abbey. Michael attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help School during his childhood years and graduated from Aquinas Institute in 1960. He received a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Windsor in 1964.
He joined the Navy in 1966, and was awarded a National Defense Service Medal.
Michael moved to East Millinocket in 1970. He worked as a technical specialist for Great Northern. Mike worked in Maine paper mills for the rest of his career, retiring from Sappi in 2007.
He enjoyed collecting baseball cards, and owned the Bullpen Baseball Card Shop in Waterville from 1986-91.
Michael is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Abbey of Fairfield; two sons, Boris Abbey, his wife, Alke, and their daughters, Mina and Ylvie, of Fayetteville, N.C., and Erik Abbey, of Fairfield; six siblings, Francis Abbey and his wife, Margarita, of Hyattsville, Md., Katie Niver and her husband, Robert Niver, of Kissimee, Fla., Barbara Ritzenthaler and her husband, Larry, of Webster, N.Y., Mark Abbey and his wife, Deborah, of Webster, N.Y., Mary Kunert, and her husband, Fred, of Sparks, Nev., and Rita Cassidy, and her husband, John, of Rochester, N.Y.; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.
Interment will be at White Haven Memorial Park in Pittsford, N.Y. (Morning Sentinel 10/9/2010)
