Engineer. He built large sections of the London subway system and Liverpool's Mersey Tunnel. He studied at King's College, London, graduating in1857. He then served an apprenticeship in his father's engineering consultancy. In 1863 he was made a partner and worked on the design of the railroad bridges at Battersea, London. He served in the London Rifle Volunteer Brigade and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1863. During this period he patented designs for "improvements in machinery for nicking and dressing the heads of screw-blanks" , "improvements in the manufacture of method of repairing railway rails and other iron in a permanent way and in the machinery to be employed therein" and "improvements in screw cutting and threading machines and in the construction of screw nails and spikes". He became a member of the Institute of Civil Engineers in 1873. In 1874 he became senior partner in the family firm on the death of his father. The firm were consulting engineers to the Central Argentine Railway; the South Indian Railway; the Southern São Paulo Railway and the Dorada Railway. He was also involved in the construction of the Snowdon Mountain Railway and the construction of Marylebone Station. He worked on several of London's early subway lines, including the Great Northern and City line and the Hampstead line. He also designed much of the Cape Colony railroads and the Rhodesian railroad system, which included the Victoria Falls Bridge. He was knighted by Queen Victoria for his work on the Mersey railroad Tunnel, Liverpool. With James Greathead he was joint engineer of the Liverpool Overhead Railway, the first electric elevated city railroad in the world. In 1887 he was made an honorary fellow of King's College, London, and later served as president of the Institute of Civil Engineers. His company still opperates today, and is known as Hyeder Consulting.
