Sister Benilda Desmond, OP, died peacefully on Dec. 25th, 2008, at the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose Motherhouse, Fremont, Calif. Born on Sept. 13, 1928, in Los Angeles to Thomas Desmond of Dunmanway, County Cork, Ireland, and Melanie Rousset of Fort Good Hope, Canada, she was given the name of (Lillian Marie). Her sister, Mary Catherine, and parents predeceased her.
Serving as a Dominican Sister for 61 years, she was much loved for her engaging teaching in elementary and high schools at St. Elizabeth, Oakland; Sacred Heart, Los Angeles; San Gabriel Mission High, San Gabriel; St. Michael High, Los Angeles; Flintridge Sacred Heart, Flintridge-La Canada; and Mater Dei High, Santa Ana. She ministered as vocation director for 13 years followed by adult education and faith formation ministry at St. Bede Parish, La Canada and St. Dominic's, Eagle Rock.
Sister Benilda's life was centered on sacred scripture which she proclaimed, taught, preached, and shared in retreats with great passion and love and which fed her commitment to justice. She is survived by her aunt, Bridget O'Leary; many relatives in Ireland; and Sr. Teresa Deasy, PBVM; Rev. Tim Deasy; Rev. Jerry Deasy; and Msgr. Michael Desmond in the US.
