Birth: 1821
Death: Aug. 24, 1868

Linguist and Philologist. A native of Leipzig, Germany, he came to the United States in 1833, when he was twelve years old. A graduate of the New York University, he was considered one of the great linguists of his era. He became professor of the University in 1846, and taught modern languages there. Adler is best remembered for his 1849 work, "The Dictionary of German and English Langauges." The publication became one of the great works of linguism. It is said that the writing and getting the work published was such a strain on Adler, that this was the reason he was admitted to the Bloomingdale Insane Asylum in Bloomingdale, New York, in 1853. He lived at the asylum until his death in 1868.
