Mr. John Max Barnes, 82, died Saturday, June 14, 2014 at the Hospice Home at High Point. He was born on May 8, 1932 in Randolph County, NC to John Henry Barnes and Marinda Jane Harris Barnes. Max was a graduate of Davis-Townsend School, where he drove a school bus and played baseball. He received an associate degree in diesel engineering from NC State. He was a truck driver doing long distance freight with 5 million accident free miles logged and also worked as a machinist at Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock on the U.S.S. Forrestal and U.S.S. Enterprise for their 1st day at sea. He was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. Max was an avid deer hunter, enjoyed traveling, and spent many years coaching Pee-wee football and baseball. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Huskins Barnes on September 22, 1991, whom he married on January 20, 1952. Also preceding him in death was a sister, Ruby Barnes Owens. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Susan Mitchell, Rev. Roger Weisner, and Rev. Richard Huskins officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
