John and his twin sister, Alicia, were born to Matthew and Margaret (Byrne) Bolger and grew up at 31 Halsted Street in Newark, NJ. He married Jean Williams in Swoyersville outside Wilkes-Barre on June 18, 1949.
John served in the US Marines during WWII and the Korean War. The family settled in California in 1953 and moved to Ione in 1957 where he spent the rest of his life. He was a football coach for many years at Ione HS.
