Bernard D. Allen, 86; of Monroe died at Mercy Memorial Nursing Center of Monroe.
Born July 24, 1922 in Ottawa, LaSalle County, Illinois, Bernard was the son of Lewis G. and Mary E. (Davey) Allen; he married Evelyn L. Horton on September 8, 1958 in Monroe.
He came to Detroit in 1924 after the death of his mother, and was raised by his uncle and aunt George and Viola Davey I. He attended Southeastern High School and Cass Technical in Detroit. He graduated from the Locksmithing Institute, and was a bonded Locksmith which was his hobby.
Bernard farmed his uncle's farm in Petersburg for a time, and was employed by Ford Motor Company, Dundee. He was a patrolman for the Detroit and Cleveland Navigation Company serving on the S.S. Western States, and various passenger liners; he also served on the S.S. Alpena stone and coal freighter. In Monroe he worked for the former Navarre Distributing Company hauling beer fron Cincinnati and Milwaukee to Monroe and Adrian, and then was employed by Rau Cartage Inc. of Monroe for twenty seven, years retiring in 1977.
He was a member, and Past Noble Grand, of the Monroe Lodge # 19 Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and a life member of Teamsters local 299 Detroit. He was a menber of AARP, the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America, and the Russell Rescue.
Surviving are his wife Evelyn of Monroe, and a nephew Thomas R. Spangler of Jasper, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his brother Lewis Gilbert Allen and sister Edna M. Allen.
Cremation and burial at Roselawn Memorial Park have been handled by the Rupp Funeral Home of Monroe.
