SKOWHEGAN - Mary A. Austin, 88, passed away at Redington Fairview Hospital on Sept. 2, 2009, with her beloved family at her side. Mary was born on May 12, 1921, in Anson, the daughter of John and Hazel (Nutting) Redmond. Mary graduated from Madison High School in 1939. The love of her life and lifelong partner, Kendall Austin, was waiting for her with two dozen long-stem yellow roses. Soon after graduation Ken and Mary wed.

They were soon faced with a difficult decision for those times: to have money or children. Children it was. First born was Francis, next came Ronald, followed by the loss of twins, then Mary Hazel, Ann, and Gerard. Mary and Ken raised five children and welcomed many others into their home and family. They owned and operated Austin's Dairy in Bingham for many years. Mary opened a shop in her home, Mary's Sew and Sew.

Mary attended Farmington Normal School. After raising her children, Mary continued her education and worked as a certified medical assistant at Somerset Manor in Bingham and later at Mount St. Joseph's in Waterville. She also became an emergency medical technician and volunteered with Bingham Ambulance.

Mary leaves behind her son Francis Austin and his wife, Ginette, of Beacon Falls, Conn.; her son Ronald Austin and his wife, Shirley, of Dixfield; her daughter Mazel and her husband, Gary Farnham, of Solon; her son Gerard Austin and his wife, Kim, of Solon; son-in-law Jay Wallingford; 12 grandchildren, Chris, Vincent, John, Ronald, Alan, Jennifer, Adam, Israel, Amber, Tamara, Matthew and Emily; and 25 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers, Ronald and Bernard; her adoring husband, Ken; her beautiful daughter Ann; and her beloved grandson Gabe.
A celebration of Mary's life will be held at St. Sebastian Cemetery. (Morning Sentinel 9/8/2009)
