Kenny Berkemier is not buried in this cemetery. I only posted his obituary here because there is a memorial stone in this cemetery dedicated to his memory. He also owned and operated this cemetery.

J. Kenneth Berkemier

J. Kenneth Berkemier, 74, longtime Sioux City funeral director, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Mausoleum. Visitation will be 3:30 to 6 p.m. today, with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 6 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m., all at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Berkemier Chapel.

John Kenneth Berkemier was born May 13, 1928, to John W. and Marie (Dougherty) Berkemier in Sioux City. Ken attended Sioux City public schools, graduating from Central High School. He graduated from Gupton Jones Mortuary College in Dallas, Texas, in 1951.
He married Shirley Ann Reiter of Pocahontas, Iowa, on Feb. 4, 1950, in Sioux City. They spent their first year of marriage in Dallas, and moved back to Sioux City where they made their home.

Ken started in the funeral business in 1944, working with Perasso Brothers Funeral Home as an apprentice while attending Central High School. He then attended mortuary college in Dallas, returned to Sioux City and was employed by Rutledge Funeral Home. He started his own funeral home, Berkemier Funeral Home, in 1955. It still remains in the suburb of Riverside.

Ken and his wife, Shirley, also owned and operated the Boulevard Flower Shop in Riverside from 1960 until 1985. Ken owned and operated McCook Cemetery in North Sioux City, S.D. In his many years in business, he assisted several funeral homes in the tri-state area in the towns of Akron, Iowa, Ponca, Neb., and Elk Point, S.D. He was past deputy coroner of Union County, S.D. He received a certificate from the South Dakota State of Funeral Service for being a 30-year licensee in South Dakota funeral service.

He was active in the Boy Scouts of America as a young man, earning the rank of Eagle Scout and continued to serve as a Scout Master for many years. He was a first aid instructor for the Red Cross. His many memberships included being a member of the National and Iowa Funeral Directors Association, the Knights of Columbus, the Moose and the Eagles. He was past member of the Westside Cribbage League and past president of the Siouxland Funeral Directors Association. He served on the retirement board of the Sioux City Fire Department and was a board member of Calvary Cemetery. He was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sioux City.

Ken received an award from the Iowa Funeral Directors Association and the governor of Iowa for his work during the United Flight 232 crash disaster in Sioux City. He enjoyed fishing, playing cribbage, cards and gardening.

Survivors include a son, Thomas and his wife, Bonnie Berkemier of McCook Lake, S.D.; two daughters, Mary and her husband, Paul Sadek, and Kate and her husband, Tony Kayser, all of Sioux Falls, S.D.; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth, Bradley and Brett Berkemier, Ann Sadek, Kristy, Rebecca, Michael, Rachel and Teresa Kayser; a sister, Joan Vlaanderen of Sioux City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley; and a sister, Helen Richmond.

A memorial has been established in his name in care of the family.
