Howard E. Burger, formerly of Hartshorne, passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa at the age of 86. Funeral services will be held at the Jones-Harkins Funeral Home in Wilburton, Oklahoma on Saturday, June 11 at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at the Masonic Cemetery in Wilburton. The current Coweta resident was born on December 16th, 1924, in Wilburton, to Nep and Emma Burger. Howard attended Panola schools and left high school early to serve in the US Army from 1944 to 1946. He returned home to attend Eastern Oklahoma State College, graduating with an Associate Degree in 1948. In 1950, he was recalled to serve in the Army for another two years. In 1952, he enrolled at Oklahoma State University, majoring in Vocational Agriculture. Howard married Wanda Edmunds on March 6, 1953, in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. He completed his studies and graduated from OSU in 1954 with a Bachelor's Degree. He then began his teaching career at Crowder. In 1956, he joined his brother Joe as the second teacher in the Hartshorne Vocational Agriculture Department. He continued attending OSU in the summers and earned his Master's Degree in 1959. He spent his entire teaching career at Hartshorne High School, retiring in 1983, after 30-years on the job. Howard enjoyed meeting people and always had a story to tell. One of the favorite parts of Howard's job was helping his students and local 4-H members choose and raise show animals for the local, county, and state shows and fairs. He was always ready to give advice and help with whatever problems anyone had with their livestock, farm equipment, or life. After his retirement, he continued to enjoy assisting with the local shows and fairs, as well as raising cattle and baling hay. Howard loved his family, and spending time with them, especially his granddaughters and great grandchildren. Survivors include his wife Wanda of the home; sister Maxine Golightly of Wilburton; two daughters, Lea Ann Williams and her husband Steve of Norman; Laurie Zink and her husband Roger of Coweta; three grandchildren, Lauren Weatherholt and her husband Mike of Norman, Jordan Williams of Norman, Kala Zink of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and two great-grandchildren, Eli and Nora Weatherholt of Norman. Howard was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Joseph Thomas (JT), James Ethan, William Clifton (Kink); and his sister Emo Jean Rogers.
