Ernestine Lavagnino Agnew passed away peacefully in her home with her husband and family at her side.
She was born in San Juan Bautista to Ernest Lavagnino and Sarah Ahern.
She graduated from Hollister High School in 1945; went on to San Jose State University where she graduated in 1949, with honors and received her teaching credential.
At San Jose State she met her future husband, Allen Agnew.
Ernestine worked at San Ramon High in Danville and married Al in 1950, at Mission San Juan Bautista. They settled in San Luis Obispo where a large family was started until moving to Fresno in 1965.
Ernestine was involved with her children's school activities at Mission and Nativity in San Luis Obispo, and at St. Anthony's, Bullard High School and San Joaquin Memorial. She was active in the Fresno State Faculty Wives and later helped Al plan and entertain various PCAA and Cal Bowl activities.
Her talents went far beyond devoted mother and supportive wife: Ernestine taught part-time adult school in Clovis and later worked at the California Grape and Tree Fruit League and Coffee's Department Store as their bookkeeper. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing the piano and volunteering.
Most importantly to her, she has been an active member of St. Anthony's Church for more than 40 years. Ernestine enjoyed a healthy and active retirement with her husband. For the past 25 years, she enjoyed church activities, cooking, foreign travel, walking with friends, reading and watching educational programming. Many trips were made throughout the country as they visited and supported their children's dreams.
A proud third-generation California native, Ernestine was always rightfully fond of her hometown. Her father was the chief grocer and later postmaster, which meant Ernestine knew many of the residents and developed life-long ties to San Benito County. While she loved San Francisco and NYC, she remained a small-town girl who always had a positive view of life and the people in it.
While Ernestine's marriage and her children were her proudest accomplishments, it is her kindness, generosity and enthusiasm for life that touched relatives, friends, students and acquaintances everywhere she went throughout her life.
Ernestine is survived by Allen M. Agnew of Fresno, her devoted husband and soul mate; her cherished children, Michael and his wife Candee of Madera, Patrick and his wife Pam of Benicia, Thomas and his wife Cinthya of Fresno, Anne and her husband Edward of San Francisco, and Mark of Phoenix. She was deeply proud of her grandchildren, Suzanne and her husband Scott, Timothy, Bennett, Camille and Anthony; her great-grandchildren, Eric, Heidi and Ella, as well as Cherie Slane and her husband Mike and Michael Rodriguez and his wife Lagille. She is also survived by her brother, Steve Lavagnino and his wife Jeanne of Shell Beach; nieces Barbara, Susan, and Mary; and nephews, Bob, Steve, and Tom.
