James Miller Ainsworth, 88, of Grenada, died Friday, May 14, 2010, in Meridian. He was born Sept. 9, 1921, to Thomas Marvin and Sally McPhearson Ainsworth in Vicksburg. His father was a Methodist minister and he lived in several communities in the Mississippi Methodist Conference. He graduated from Forest Hill High School, was a graduate of East Central Junior College and Millsaps College in the field of mathematics and received a master's degree from the University of Georgia.
Before entering his teaching career, he served in the Air Force during WW II in the Pacific theater as a meteorologist, reaching the rank of captain. Most of his career as an educator took place in Grenada, where he was principal of Lizzie Horn Elementary, John Rundle High School and later, Grenada High School. His philosophy of teaching was to always keep the confidence of children and young people, so that you would not lose their trust.
Mr. Ainsworth was a member of First United Methodist Church of Grenada, where he was a long time teacher of the John Rundle Bible Class. He strived to be a humble servant of Jesus Christ.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Grenada. Visitation was Monday, May 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Garner-Harper Funeral Home in Grenada.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances, also a long time teacher and child of a Methodist minister; son, Stewart Ainsworth of Taylorsville, Ky.; daughters, Susan Delcambre of Brandon and Jo Beth Maranto and husband, Greg, of Meridian; beloved grandchildren, Zack Robinson (Ami), Lauren Robinson, Claire Kolvites (Mark), Beth Rottman (Jeff), Stephen Maranto, Mary Frances Maranto; beloved great-grandchildren, Cole Robinson, Baylie Miller Gallagher, Reagan Miley.
The family requests memorials be made to First United Methodist of Grenada or the Class of 1973 James M. Ainsworth Mathematics Award Fund, c/o 395 N Hidden Valley Road, Grenada, MS 38901.
Garner-Harper Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
