Arlene L. Bishop
May 27, 1919 - May 22, 2015

Arlene Bishop was born May 27, 1919 to Lloyd and Della Denton Hess in Dwight, Illinois. She grew up in Lostant, Illinois with her parents and older brothers Bob and Warren. After graduating from high school, she stayed with family friends, the Wagners, while attending beauty school where she became a hair stylist or "beauty operator" as they were called in those days.

During WWII, Arlene took a job at Chanute Field (Air Force Base) near Rantoul, Illinois and also volunteered with USO. While there, she met Glen W. Bishop, a tall, slim, blue-eyed Army Air Corps private from Texas and fell in love. She used to tell that she even "put the matches in the refrigerator one day" while thinking about him. They were married in Champaign, Illinois on June 1, 1946. When Glen finished his time in the Army, they moved to Austin, Texas where they rented a room with kitchen privileges. Glen continued his education at the University of Texas and worked part-time while Arlene put her training to use, working in a beauty shop. Their only means of transportation was a motorbike named Chloe. She gave her elderly neighbors a fright, perched on Chloe, behind Glen, in her eighth month of pregnancy.

In August of 1947, Arlene gave birth to Mary Ann. The family of three moved to Bishop family land north of Georgetown, Texas. Virginia "Ginger" was born in 1950. By that time, Glen had started a dairy farm. Arlene raised hundreds of calves over the next 36 years, working 7 days a week, no matter what the weather. She managed to always keep a clean house, sew all her own clothes as well as Mary Ann's and Ginger's, grow and can fruit and vegetables for the family and put three good meals a day on the table, every day, including desserts and cookies to go with coffee. Arlene was well-known among friends and family for her good cooking but when Larry Bingham tasted her buttermilk pie, her reputation spread. Larry asked her to make pies for his hotel and restaurant, the Benchmark, and she accepted. In the late 1980's, "Mrs. Bishop's Buttermilk Pie" became a popular menu item.

In 1986, Glen and Arlene sold the dairy cows and in 1987, opened The Live Oaks at Berry Creek RV Park. They enjoyed meeting people and made new friends as they continued to work 7 days a week, as they had done so many years with the dairy farm. They did make time on Sundays to attended First United Methodist Church, where they were members for many years. Arlene widowed in September 2010, at age 91. She did her best to continue helping with the RV park and never stopped riding her bicycle daily (a 3-wheeler in her later years) until she broke her hip while getting ready for bed, in 2011. She was never able to move back home but occasionally, enjoying her roses and chickens. She passed away at The Legacy at Georgetown on May 22, 2015, just 5 days before her 96th birthday.

Arlene is survived by her daughters, Mary Ann Joseph and husband Dan of Georgetown, Texas and Ginger Bishop of Florence, Texas; and grandchildren, Glen Ochs and wife April and Becky Ochs Britt and husband Carl. She also enjoyed many years with step-grandchildren, Donna Joseph Ready, Danny Joseph Jr., Krista Ochs and Kelli Ochs Johnson; as well as eight great-grandchildren, Jessica Steedley, Maddie Ready, Jessica Ochs, and Brandi, Randy, Rachelle, Brittani and Ricky Johnson; and eight great great-grandchildren. Others important to her were her life-long friend Jean Bastion of Illinois, the late Doreen Birkelbach friend of 63 years, the Wittera family neighbors for 68 years, the Robert Bost family, and others, too numerous to mention. She was preceded in death by her nephew Gary Hess and her niece Linda Hess.

The family wants to thank the staff at The Legacy for their loving care of our mother. We appreciate the friends she made there, in the last months of her life.
