Martin Allhoff arrived in Coloma about 1849 in a quest for gold, apparently he was not successful and in about 1852 he went to Ohio. While there he married 14 year old Louise Wever/Weaver and brought her with him when he returned to Coloma. Shortly after arriving back in Coloma Allhoff bought some hillside property and began planting a vineyard. By 1857 the vineyard was flourishing, saloons in the boomtown of Virginia City, NV being some of his best customers. Because of this Allhoff kept an agent stationed there. When he received news that his agent in Virginia City had been arrested and charged with tax and licensing violations by the Internal Revenue Service Allhoff went there and upon arrival was charged and indicted on much the same violations. Dacing the thought of jail time etc. Allgoff ended his life in the late 1860's.
After Martin Allhoff's death his widow married twice widowed Robert Chalmers in 1869. Agfer the marriage Chalmers moved to the vineyard property. He went to work expanding the vineyard and really made a profitable business. Sadly in 1879 Chalmers contracted a mysterious disease that left him blind and mentally incompetent. By 1880 his brother was appointed guardian of Robert and allegedly locked in the cellar of what is now known as the Vineyard House until his death. Thereafter one of Robert's sons sued Louisa, after a lengthy battle she acquired the Vineyard House and 10 acres. Some say to this day the Vineyard House is haunted.
