Jan 25, 1951, Gate City Guide, Rapid City:
In the passing of Thomas Ballew on January 16, Pennington County lost one of the oldest residents of a heart attack, was 74 years old and lived in the Black Hills since he was a very young man.

Mr. Ballew had been up town after his mail just before the fatal attack occurred. He had returned home and was cranking a truck in the yard when he was stricken and died almost instantly. He had been enjoying apparent good health, and his death was a great shock to his friends and family.

Born in Hale, Missouri, October 4, 1876, Mr. Ballew came to the Hills as a young man and had resided here ever since. He was married to Myrtle Woods in Rapid City in 1902 and eight children were born to them.

He is survived by his wife of Hill City: three daughters, Mrs. Bernice Bohner of Renton WA; Mrs. Helen Gregson of Puyallup WA; and Mrs. Zelda Yemmington of Colorado Springs CO; five sons, Wesley of Soap Lake WA; Norman of Seattle WA; Tom and Donald of Tacoma WA; Morris of Puyallup WA; and several grandchildren.
