James Cordell Andrews, age 69, 120 Andrews Road, Butler, passed away Friday, May 23, 2008, at Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born in the Elk Mills Community of Carter County to the late Alvin Gather and Sarah Matilda Walsh Andrews. Mr. Andrews was a member and elder of Hampton Christian Church. He enjoyed participating in the Carter County Christian Men's Fellowship and was involved in instituting the ARM in Carter County. Mr. Andrews worked several years with "Food for the Multitude" and was active with the Carter County Community Service Counsel. He retired in 2001 as supervisor with the Department of Human Services and enjoyed farming. While serving in the US Army, he was stationed in Germany and worked as a medic.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Andrews was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma "Cookie" Cole Andrews.

Survivors include his wife, Lynn Kay Oliver Andrews, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Hayley and Lucas Penix, Elizabethton; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Susan Andrews, Johnson City; two precious granddaughters; Livvie Andrews and Delaney Penix; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, J.B. Andrews, Will H. and Eleanor Andrews, all of Elizabethton, Dennis and Bernetta Andrews, Glen Burnie, Md., and two sisters-in-law, Ginger Deloach and husband Tony, Elizabethton, and Jane Bishop, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Andrews will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, May 26, in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, minister, and the Rev. Bruce Hendrich officiating. Music will be under the direction of Debbie Gouge. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday in the chapel prior to the service. Friends may also call at the residence of his daughter, Hayley Penix, 1006 Riverview Drive, Elizabethton, at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Jon Shell, bagpiper. Everyone is welcome to meet the family at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be John Bradley, Eddie McGee, James H. Andrews, Jeff Andrews, John Andrews, Tony Deloach, Steven Andrews and Floyd Miller. Honorary pallbearers will be the elders and deacons of Hampton Christian Church and the medical, nursing and respiratory staffs of 3400 wing and ICU 2600 of Johnson City Medical Center.
