Nadine Grace (Birra) Knight, 93, of Suey Creek Canyon was born on October 23, 1918 in San Luis Obispo. Her parents were Olympio and Giglia Blanche Birra. She died August 14, 2012.
She graduated from San Luis Obispo Senior High School in 1936, having been a member of the California Scholarship Federation. She attended the University of California in Berkeley and graduated with honors with a Private Secretarial degree from Armstrong Business College in the same city.
As a teenager, she was a member of the Rainbow Girls. Also, a demitted member of San Luis Obispo Corona Chapter 107 of Eastern Star.
She married Ben Knight on Easter Sunday, March 24, 1940. The family moved to Santa Maria in 1943, becoming involved with raising and processing fryers in barracks buildings abandoned by the former Army Air Base that trained P-38 flyers on property that is part of the Santa Maria Airport. While engaged in that endeavor the family supplied local markets and restaurants for a period of ten years.
She was involved with Cub Scouts as a Den Mother, served as President of the, now defunct, Airbase PTA and held the position of Secretary of the Santa Maria PTA Council. She served as a mentor for the GenSpan Foundation, was a member of the Elwin Mussell Senior Citizens Center, enjoying trips with the Travel Club and a member of the Santa Maria Elks Widows Chapter of the Red Hatters.
She and her husband were members of the Orcutt Circle O Square Dance group. They built a tear-drop trailer and enjoyed years of camping with close friends. Graduating to a motor home, they toured the United States for four months. Also, enjoyed fishing from their pontoon party boat on the local lakes.
In 1956, she started a career with the Southern Counties Gas Company which merged with Southern California Gas Company. She served in various positions, retiring in 198l, after 25 years of service, having served as Secretary to the Division Superintendent.
She received numerous awards for her creative writing contributions, dabbled in oil painting, needlework and crafts.
A custom home, of her design, in Suey Creek Canyon, had been her residence since 1978. She enjoyed the solitude and wild creatures. As an avid gardener, she designed, established and maintained a large landscaped area in her mountain retreat.
She was preceded in death by her husband, of 61 years, Ben Knight, on July 18, 2001. Surviving are daughters Joanne Thompson-Sartain and her husband, Tom, of Santa Maria; and Judith DeMar of Santa Maria; son Thomas of Cottonwood, Arizona and his wife, Terri.
Grandchildren, David Thompson and wife Rhonda, Santa Maria; Lawrence Knight and wife Tina, San Miguel; Kathleen Knight of Valley Village, CA and Christina Best of Santa Maria. She was proud of her five great-grandchildren.
Surviving, also, is sister Elaine Vaudoit of Saratoga and brother Loren Birra of San Luis Obispo. Nieces Mary Margaret Evans, Nancy Vaudoit, Lori Mazzei and Mary Ann Trongo.
She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by family members.
The Knight family would like to acknowledge and thank all the friends and acquaintances that touched her life in a positive way over the years.
