In 1860, he was a brick maker living in Franklin Township, York County, Pennsylvania, and stood 6' 0" tall with black hair and black eyes. He married Letice "Lettie" Kline and fathered Flora (b. 08/14/68 - married a Lance) and Myrtle (b. 03/03/73 - married John S. Hinkel and Robert Elmer Galbraith)).

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Franklintown, York County, August 24, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 29 as a private with Co. I, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865.

In 1880, lived in Monaghan Township, York County, and, in 1890, in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, where he was a member of Zinn Post, No. 415, G.A.R.
