John Quincy Adams married Mehitabel Ann, daughter of Taylor Small and Mehitabel (Grover) Grover, in Allen County, Indiana on October 24, 1861, and died of Typhoid Fever in Allen County, Jefferson Township, Indiana on September 18, 1879 (mortality schedule says consumption, but family record says Typhoid) (New Haven I.O.O.F. Cemetery). She died of Dropsy in Jefferson Township on April 1, 1888 (New Haven ).

Mehitable A. Grover of Bethel, Maine, was a student of the Bethel "Gould" Academy in the spring, summer, and fall terms of 1849, according to a roster dated November 17, 1849. Gould's Classical and English Academy was founded in 1836, and located in Bethel, Maine, on the eastern edge of the White Mountains, as a small private co-ed boarding school.

John was a farmer, and purchased a 40-acre farm just south of his father's on Doyle Road from William Dawkins on August 29, 1859 (February 26?), and an adjoining 40 acres from John E. and Catherine B. Fischer on April 12, 1873. On March 29, 1864, John and Joseph Violand purchased a piece of land in Jefferson Township from Christopher and Christine Leadig. John had 80 acres in section 18 of Jefferson Township, adjacent B.F. Mayes, William Heine, H. Helmich, and D. Forthmiller. Mehitable was appointed administrix of John's estate on October 18, 1879, and delivered her final report on December 23, 1880.
