Known as "Bernice" to family and friends, she was one month away from receiving her Ph.D. from Indiana University, when she died in an automobile accident in Nashville, IN. Her Ph.D. was given to her posthumously in May, 1967. The accident happened while she was enroute to IU's campus, after spending a few days in Nashville, TN with her children, Sheila and Mark and her husband, Lubby to celebrate their 21st wedding anniversary. She was the eldest of four children, born to Vivian Bernice Holland Lee and William Osborne Lee. Born and raised in Frederick, MD, she received a basketball scholarship to Virginia State College and earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from there with an emphasis in physical education. She taught high school PE in Petersburg, VA and also taught it on the college level at Virginia State University, Tennessee State University and Fisk University. She was a member of First Baptist Church-Capital Hill, Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. and the Circlelettes Social Club.
