Ross Bittinger, 63, a member of New Mexico Western College faculty since 1949, serving as chairman of the Arts and Crafts Department, died last Thursday at Fort Bayard Veterans Hospital. He had been in the hospital since last November, following a stroke. Mr. Bittinger is survived by his widow, Mrs. Kathryn Bittinger of Silver City, and a daughter, Miss Jane Bittinger of Morenci Ariz., a high school teacher. The deceased was born in Sand Creek, Mich., and served in the U. S. Navy in World War I. He came to Silver City as chairman of the Arts and Crafts department at New Mexico Western College in 1949. In addition to holding BSA and MA degrees in Fine Arts, University of Michigan, with emphasis on architecture and decorative design, he held a PSD In Psychology from the College of Divine Metaphysics, Indianapolis, Md. In 1957, he was approved for a Fulbright government scholarship to teach in the field of Western Cultures at the University of Rangoon, in Rangoon, Burma. Mr. Bittinger was an affiliate of I Kappa Pi Mu honorary art fraternity, NMEA, a member of the American Institute of Architects. He was a 32nd degree Mason in the Scottish Rite Chapter in Santa Fe, was a life member of the American Rifle Association and a member of the Episcopal Church. While a professor at the University of Michigan, he was coauthor with Prof. Fowler of the book, Modern Creative Design and Its Application, which was used as a textbook at the university, and at Western College. An art scholarship fund is being established by the family at New Mexico Western College. Also, a memorial book fund to the College Library. Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Curtis Mortuary chapel, the Rev. C. M. Henderson of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, officiating. Burial took place in the Silver City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Woodford Johnson, Kenneth Mills, Earl Weaver, Kenneth Sparks, Fred Norton and Robert Cooper.
