Joseph F. Martin, Jr., age 67 of Plano, Illinois, passed away at his home on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on May 5, 1934 in Englewood, New Jersey, the son of Joseph F, and Lydia (Garrison) Martin, Sr. Joe was a member of the 1952 graduating class of Downers Grove High School.
    Joseph was united in marriage on July 11, 1953 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Downers Grove, Illinois, to the former Nancy D.J. Wills and they spent the next 48 happy years of their lives together. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.
    Mr. Martin began his plumbing career in 1953, a career which spanned over the next forty nine years and included serving as a former President of the DuPage County Plumbing Contractors. He and his wife, Nancy, started their plumbing business in 1971 in Lisle, Illinois. In 1974 they moved their business, Martin Plumbing to Kendall County, IL. and Joe continued working until his retirement in 1999. Also in that year, Joe was the recipient of a successful lung transplant. Mr. Martin was a very active member of the First Lutheran Church of Plano, IL., where he had served as a member of its church counsel. Joe was a former Chairman of the Fox Valley Family Y.M.C.A. and a member of its Board of Directors. He was also a member of the Masonic Order of Grove Lodge #824 in Downers Grove, IL. Mr. Martin was a former member of the United States Navel Reserves.
    He is survived by his wife, Nancy Martin of Plano, IL.; his children, Deborah L. (Douglas) Balzer of Phoenix, Arizona, Lydia A. (Todd) Boring of Plano,IL., N. Victoria "Vicki" (Tim) Kern of Sandwich, IL., Sandra L. (Craig) Anderson of Earlville, IL., and Thomas (Lisa) Martin of Newark, IL; his grandchildren, Adam, Nathan, Ryan, and Mary Balzer, Douglas and Nancy Boring, Robert and Heather Erickson, Abel, Samuel, Joseph and Laura Anderson and Joshua, Katie, Amy and Jessie Martin; and his great-grandson, Jackson Robert.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph F. and Lydia Martin, Sr.; his infant grandson, Douglas Balzer, Jr.; and both his maternal and paternal grandparents.
    Funeral Services for Mr. Martin will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 16, 2002 at the First Lutheran Church of Plano with Pastor James E. Reents officiating. Interment will follow at Mr. Martin's home on River Road.
    Friends may call from 2 until 8 PM on Friday, February 15, 2002 at the Larson-Nelson Funeral Home, 1010 W. South Street, in Plano, Illinois, with a Masonic Service to be held at 7:00 PM.
    His family would like to thank the Vitas Hospice for the wonderful care given to Joe during his difficult time. Memorials may be directed in Joseph's name, to the American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association, the Fox Valley Y.M.C.A. and the First Lutheran Church of Plano.
