From last Saturday's daily issue
Carl Adkins, aged 16 years, son of Mr and Mrs Walter Adkins, of upper Fourth avenue, met a terrible death on the C & O rails, Friday afternoon, about 3:30 o'clock, when he was struck by an east-bound freight train. The accident occurred at the switch for the foundry and other concerns, a few hundred years below the Avis crossing. There seems to be few, if any, eye-witnesses to the boy's death. He was fishing down on the river bank, it is said, and had started to go up to the crossing to get something to eat, and didn't give himself time to clear the track in front of the approaching train, and was caught by the engine, the entire train passing over him. The whole upper portion of his head was crushed off and his body was rolled and mangled. Death to the unfortunate victim was no doubt instantaneous. The remains were taken to the E M Meadows undertaking establishment and prepared for burial, which will take place in Hil Top cemetery, Sunday afternoon, after funeral services from the home at 2 o'clock by Rev W E Yates.
The sad and untimely death of this boy is a crushing blow to his family and friends. He was a bright and popular little fellow (being below the average size for one his age) and possessed considerable stage ability and was a very good imitator of Charlie Chaplin, whose "part" he was always given in local talent entertainments.
The distressed parents have the sympathy of the public in their great loss.
