John R. "Ron" Bobek of 395 Avalon Drive passed away at 8:50 a.m. Jan. 3, 2010, in Jameson Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. He was born in New Kensington, the son of John and Genevieve O'Tremba Bobek.
He graduated in 1960 from Ken High School, New Kensington. He was employed for 37 1/2 years at Norfolk Southern railroad's Conway Yard, where he retired as a jitney driver in 2002. He was a member of St. Mary Church of Mary, Mother of Hope Parish. A decorated veteran of the Army, he served in Stuttgart, Germany, and was honorably discharged in 1963 with the rank of sergeant. Some of his interests included fishing, shooting pool, and spending time with his grandchildren. who he dearly loved.
His wife is Joan Bobek, whom he married May 24, 1969.
Surviving are his children, Janene M. Rodgers and her husband, William, and Christopher J. Bobek, all of New Castle. Preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, 111 W. Falls St. The New Castle Area Veterans Honor Guard will perform military rites at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated tomorrow at 9 a.m. in St. Mary Church.
Entombment will follow in Resurrection Mausoleum in St. Mary Cemetery.
