According to family lore, Matthew R. Parrish was a school teacher and Susan Mathis was his pupil. One month before her sixteenth birthday, Susan married Mr. Parrish on May 13, 1852 (per Tennessee State Marriage records for Montgomery County, Tennessee.)

About 1855 Matthew decided to move to Texas, but he left Susan with her widowed mother. Several years later, "when he had accumulated a sum of money, he wrote her to know if she would live with him and she agreed to do so and he came for her and took her away to Texas (abt. 1860) . . ."

While living in McKinney, Texas, Susan gave birth to a little boy named Charlie. Sadly Susan passed away shortly after her son's birth.

NOTE: The quotation above was part of a letter that was written in 1904 by William Allen Turner, who was a nephew of M. R. Parrish. Almost 100 years later the letter was contributed to and published on a website (http://www.dctn.com) that was devoted to all things related to Dickson County, Tennessee.

Bradley Cemetery: "In memory of Susan R., wife of M. R. Parrish. Born June 14, 1836. Died July 19, 1861. Aged 25 years." By the side of this grave was a little stone on which was inscribed: "In memory of Charlie D., son of M. R. and S. R. Parrish born July 8, 1861; died Oct. 11, 1861." The young mother had given her life to the babe whose little body soon followed her to the lonely graveyard on the hill.
