Death Calls First Head of Fair, 83
Charles Eugene Anderson, 83, of 209 N. Maple St., died Tuesday night at Watervliet hospital, where he had been taken only a few days earlier. He was a former Hartford township supervisor and first president of the Van Buren County Fair.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Calvin chapel. The Rev. William E. Goltz, Congregational pastor, will officiate and burial will be in the family lot at Pioneer cemetery. Relatives will be pallbearers.
Known to many persons as "Uncle Charley", Anderson was a farmer and although not actively engaged in their operation, he owned several farms at the time of his death. He was born at Lawrence, the son of William and Louise Stebbins Anderson.
Anderson was one of the founders of the Anderson flour mill here which later became the village's first electric plant. It was located on the Paw Paw river near the present dam site west of the Bangor road. For 29 years he was Hartford township supervisor.
His nearest relatives are nieces and nephews. Among them are William Anderson, Mrs. Walter Hartman and Marion Anderson, all of Hartford. Others are Mrs. Wave Whiting, Detroit; Charles Anderson, Clarion, Ill.; and Mable Garner, Auburn, Ala. William Anderson and his sister, Mrs. Whiting, made their home with the Charles Andersons as children.
